When I was in LA last week I had dinner with a friend who is a prominent biologist. Like other scientists, he’s upset by the attacks on evolution by the religious right. On the other hand, he pointed out that if evolution isn’t real then we don’t need to worry about bird flu mutating.

I’m no flat-earther, and I fully accept that mutation, and structural adaptation happen.
But I’m also a stupid pediatrician, and I have yet to read an account of speciation that makes sense to me.
Speciation = The evolutionary formation of new biological species, usually by the division of a single species into two or more genetically distinct ones.
