Motorcyclists: Libertarians or Socialists?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Preusser Research Group released studies recently demonstrating that motorcycle fatalities increase 25, 50 or 100 percent after the repeal of state helmet laws. Medical costs increase, too because of an increase in serious injuries. A large share of the medical cost is picked up by state and federal governments.Motorcyclists have aggressively pressed in state legislatures for the "freedom" to ride without helmets and they have succeeded to a great degree. But they also want a free ride on the health care system. It seems the anti-helmet groups are Libertarians when it comes to having fun but Socialists when it comes to taking responsibility for their actions.
