Digital mammo critique
The New England Journal of Medicine published a study last week on the efficacy of digital versus analog mammograms and many general news publications reported on it. The main thrust of the stories was that digital is better, an angle that comported with the conventional wisdom and so was easy for reporters and editors to accept.Schwitzer health news blog criticizes many of those reports for being "shallow and incomplete" and points out that it's still unclear whether the use of digital mammography will reduce deaths from breast cancer. We do know it will increase costs.
