Heads start to roll at UC Irvine

The CEO of UC Irvine Medical Center has been place on administrative leave following the scandal in which UCI basically pretended to have a liver transplant program. Patients on the waiting list died as the program passed up livers due to the lack of surgeons to implant them. Even the few patients lucky enough to get a transplant didn't fare too well --their survival rates were far below the national averages. The CEO is lucky they just asked for his head. They could have asked for his liver, like in Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. The root cause of the program's problems seems to have been the heart attack suffered in 2001 by one of the two transplant surgeons. The hospital never was able to find a full-time replacement.Read more in the LA Times.
