A new study of medicines prescribed in the U.S. has found that many patients are told to use drugs with "black box" warnings even though those drugs aren't suitable for their medical needs.

Less than 1 percent of outpatients who received medication in 2002 were prescribed a medication that violated a prescription drug's black box warning, according to a study in the February 13 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

The PharmaLive article is misleading, because very few drugs have black box warnings in the first place. If there is no black box warning then of course it can't be violated. When there were black box warnings, prescribers ignored them 7% of the time.
