Extended childhood

Extended childhoodIn New Jersey you can now be counted as a kid until you're 30. The state has passed legislation that allows unmarried adults who are under 30 to be treated as dependents under their parents' health insurance policies (with some exceptions) according to USA Today. It's an interesting way to address the problem of young uninsureds. States like Massachusetts that have considered mandating insurance coverage for all residents have had to contend with the likelihood that it would encourage young, healthy people to leave or avoid the state. The New Jersey measure has a number of problems --insurers and employers warn of unexpected consequences in terms of the availability and cost of coverage--but it does have the benefit of making the state more attractive to people who are starting their careers.
