Web based CME is at least as good as the in-person kind

A randomized, controlled trial demonstrated that online CME is at least as effective as live sessions. The live group and online group were both significantly more knowledgeable after the session and 12 weeks later. The online group was doing a better job 12 weeks later at following the clinical guidelines that the course had covered, but the group that attended the live group actually experienced a decline in conformance to the guidelines. The study was published in JAMA and reported by Medscape. There is some very good online CME content, including programs offered by Medscape, Clinical Care Options and Advanced Practice Strategies. There is also plenty of unimaginative courseware that is basically printed material reproduced in a "roll and scroll" format on the web.
